Alfred the Emo

Alfred originated from this cartoon, which I drew during sophomore year. He’s always been on the cusp of being a mere throwaway character, but he’s popped up now and again often enough that I consider him a part of the main cast of Ralph and Chuck.

I’m glad the emo/goth thing is out of vogue, although the “hipster” replacement isn’t much of an improvement. I remember that this cartoon went over very well when it was published in the Mill Stream. It was a bit cheap, but apparently people love to make fun of “emo” kids. Go figure. I think the appeal of doing so stemmed from the underlying hypocrisy of the style- if you were REALLY so depressed and disenchanted, you wouldn’t go to such an effort to broadcast it.
